Voices Art Quilt Exhibit

Yesterday I paid a visit to the PAQA-South Art Quilt exhibit called Voices.  You may visit the show for free at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary, North Carolina through July 2, 2016.

I mostly just photographed the quilts from across the room.  Downstairs, the quilts are in a salon-like setting with a fireplace, grand piano, and window drapes, but lots of room to move around.

Don't forget to go upstairs to see the rest of the exhibit.

Here is a quilt by my friend, Peg Henderson, which uses pieces of the beaded dress she wore at her daughter's wedding.

In the showcase display is this lovely arrangement of semi-sheer circles representing harmony.

The Page-Walker is an elegant old building that once was a railroad hotel.  I love to see what is blooming in the gardens and grounds, and also check out the sculptures and other interesting features of the gardens.

I noticed information about the Pollinator Garden.  It is an effort by the Cary Woman's Club, the Cary Garden Club, Friends of Page-Walker, and the town of Cary.  It is to encourage pollinators such as butterflies, bees, birds, and more.

This large sculpture is called Child's Play, Revisited.

They have opened up an area beside the Page-Walker where there is a small stage, open grass for a concert area, a pond with fountains, and beautiful landscaping.

There are some historic buildings such as the old smoke house from the Page-Walker.

I have seen this horse sculpture before, but I think he has been moved to this strategic location next to the small stage area.

I always enjoy a visit to the Page-Walker...and when there is a quilt exhibit as well, it makes for a nice day.

Art Quilt: Connections

I went to the PAQA-South quilt exhibit at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary yesterday, thinking that I would linger and take some photos prior to my art quilt group going out there for our November meeting.  I took a few photos in the foyer of the old house, and was told by the lady at the desk that I could not take individual photos of the quilts.  I could only take shots of the quilts from across the room.  Well, that is the first time anyone has stopped me from taking pics at this venue.

In the display case at the entrance, there is a colorful arrangement of prayer flags made by members of PAQA-South.  I must have missed the memo asking us to make these.  They look great!

I found my quilt upstairs on the second floor.  The room is not nearly as lovely as the downstairs parlor with the gorgeous wood floors, grand piano, and fireplace.  It is just a meeting room.  But I liked the quilts upstairs.  Mine is the little guy at lower center.

Here is the wall at the far end of the room.  The two quilts on each end are by Raleigh quilter Roxanne Lessa.

Here are some more on a different wall upstairs.

And these are on the wall opposite my quilt.  My friend Roberta Morgan's quilt is the one with the faces next to the window.

It has been beautiful in Raleigh.  I took my dog for a walk at Umstead State Park, which actually adjoins my neighborhood.  Instead I drove to the entrance off Glenwood so we could walk around Big Lake.  The leaves are just starting to change there.

We are now in the mountains, where it is quite chilly and there is a freeze warning for tonight.  I started quilting an antique quilt top this afternoon.  It is going well, and I should finish quilting it this weekend.  Photos to come in a future post.  Here is a teaser:

Art Quilt: Connections! Opens Today!

The latest PAQA-South art quilt exhibit is now open to the public at the Page-Walker Art and History Center in Cary, North Carolina.

Here is an image of the main exhibit room downstairs at the Page-Walker.

And here is a journal page that I made featuring this event.  The names of the participating artists are on the right.

I hope to visit the exhibit today or tomorrow.  I will not be able to attend the artist reception.  But here, once again, is my little contribution to the show.

The Traveling Day Lilies

It took me a long time to finish my art quilt, now titled The Traveling Day Lilies.

It is raw-edge appliqué stitched down with embroidery floss.  I quilted it with Superior metallic thread in green and a Valdani cotton in gold.  I added some miscellaneous beads to the stamens of the flowers.

Here is another detail shot.

I have entered this in the next PAQA-South quilt show to be held at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary this fall.

We have been traveling a lot.  Besides our mountain cabin, we have also been to Asheville for a weekend with family and friends.  Ten of us attended a concert at the Pisgah Brewing Company with Trampled By Turtles.  Funny name for a group of remarkable musicians who can pick QUICK!

Here is a new picture of my little grand baby, Charlie.  She is a joy.  I still babysit for her twice a week and also kept her last weekend.

This past week I have been to the National Teapot exhibit in Creedmoor, NC, and also to my old quilt bee, The Whacky Ladies.  More to come in future posts!

Stitched and Quilted

Here is an old project that I finished quilting yesterday!  It is raw-edge appliqué stitched down with embroidery   floss.  I quilted the flowers and foliage with gold cotton thread,  and used a metallic light green for all the background.  I added some large beads to the ends of the stamens.  I'll take some detail pictures for another post.

I will finish the binding, sleeve, and label next week,  and hopefully enter this piece into the PAQA-South Members' Show which will be at Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary, NC this fall.

More Quilts From Art Quilts: Whimsy!

Yesterday I went back to the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary, NC, to take some more photos of the Whimsy! quilts.  The first time I went, I ran out of memory on my phone!  I had a little longer to spend this time.

I do not know musical notation, so I had to read the artist statement by Liz Kuny to understand the musical reference.  I like the very graphic quality of this piece.

The next happy little piece was inspired by the Word Challenge.  It is made by Teresa Wall.

The next piece is a fabric puzzle.  Each piece connects to the others.  I like the complementary colors of blue and orange, which is actually rust-dyed.

Here is another small but exuberant quilt called Break of Dawn by Eileen Kane.

The next quilt is larger, and is by a well-known quilter named Teri Stegmiller.  It is a whole-cloth painted quilt with some delightful quilting.

Next to her quilt in the foyer is Frolicking, by Margarita Korloth.  She uses some paper and recycled materials along with cloth to make her joyful people.

Also in the foyer hangs this piece called Up the Down Staircase.  Her inspiration was Cubism.

Also in the foyer...this interesting quilt that makes you pause for a second...and third...look!  I happen to agree with her title.

A House is Not a Home Without a Dog, by Susan Robbins

Speaking of dogs, I took my own personal pooch to a groomer not far from the quilt exhibit in Cary to get her summer shave.  She has been suffering under her heavy fur coat since summer temperatures finally arrived here in the south.  Not any more!  She does not look too happy in her picture, but I think she will be much more comfortable.

I posted this picture on Facebook, and one of my friends asked if they charged extra for the tail!  Ha!
