Art Museum Lecture...and More Snow

Thursday I decided to take advantage of the fact that I live only a few miles from the North Carolina Museum of Art.  I attended a lecture by Joseph Covington on the Post-Impressionists:  Van Gogh, Seurat, Gauguin, and Lautrec.  It was part of a continuing Art History survey course.

I loved it!  It helped that I had seen many of the featured paintings of these artists in person in New York, Chicago, St. Louis, and here in Raleigh.

Sunday at Le Grand Jatte by George Seurat

It was so interesting to hear about the relationships between the artists and the insights into the paintings.  I will probably go to more of these lectures when I can.

Thursday night we drove up to our mountain place.  It started to snow in North Wilkesboro.  We were not expecting anything except rain on Friday, but we woke up to a winter wonderland on Friday morning.  It continued to snow until about eleven o'clock this morning.

We took off on a Gator ride and it was beautiful.  So much snow ...and we saw a herd of about twelve deer running across the hill.

And, no, we still cannot move into the new cabin.  Still not permitted for occupancy.  Maybe soon?

Trying to Save a Little Snow

It is still so cold.  You know I love my dog when I am taking her for a walk and the temps are below freezing!   This is the neighbor's duck pond, slightly iced over.  Even the ducks were staying out of the water.

My oldest son and grandkids live in South Carolina, where they get even less snow than we do.  We are trying to hold on to the little snow that is left until they get here Friday evening.  In shady spots, there is still a bit on the ground. But the sun is shining brightly and doing its job.

This area beside our driveway is where most of my guests will park on Saturday.  It is supposed to shoot up into the fifties, so this will probably turn to mud.

I have been getting to know (and love) Kasey a little more each day.  In addition to motivating me to go for walks, she wants to help me do my exercise videos.

She thinks when I get down on the floor, it is to roll around with her.     Sometimes I get licked in the face with every sit-up.  I wonder why I waited so long to get another dog!

A Rare March Snow

Was it just a few days ago that I wrote my "Come On, Spring" post? It was 70 on Friday. This morning we woke up to a beautiful, fluffy, three-inch snowfall.
School is closed, although I will probably go in and work a few hours so I don't have to use any of my just-earned leave. Our spring break is now two days shorter, since those will be make-up days for students.

Charlie filled the feeders yesterday, and the birds are enjoying the good groceries. Although March snows are very infrequent here in central North Carolina, I remember one year that it snowed hard on my mother's birthday, March 3. We had to settle for a birthday phone call instead of visit since the roads were horrible. But how I wish I could still call her and wish her happy birthday tomorrow. We lost my mother back in 1984.

My husband's birthday is coming up later in March- the big six-oh. We are planning a beach trip to Sunset Beach, North Carolina. I certainly hope that the weather is warmer by March 19! Well, it is supposed to be in the 70's here by Friday. And it was 70 last Friday, as well, just three days ago.

I have been going through many years' worth of photo albums for a special birthday project for my husband. What memories they have evoked! Speaking of beach trips, here is one about thirty-five years and twenty pounds ago:

I remember Charlie waiting impatiently to leave for the beach trip as I finished sewing this bikini in our little one-bedroom apartment. I think this is the last swimsuit I sewed except for flowery "jams" for the boys back when they were popular. If I could still wear a bikini, I would gladly sew another one!
